I like the ray traced look myself, if done well. I'd agree with the sentiment that Tux, overall, is not "ideal" Maybe it reminds me of herring too much, which is not a personal favorite. I'm certainly no artist. However, I know someone who is, who's favorite medium is Illustrator and also happens to be a fan of obscure movies--perhaps even familiar with Plan 9.
