Yes!!!!!
Also, even if it's not impossible, no-one with any taste wants to get
involved:
I _could_ contribute to Linux, but there's no way I can be bothered to
even look at the code,
far less contribute, because a red mist descends ASA I even look at the
directory structure.

They are users too:
you give them a set of tools to reboot a server, offline a disk in a
RAID array, check the length of a mail queue ...
it's only the "developers" (of the kernel/apps, ...) who really care
about any of the underlying stuff.
