asks for for info and graphics and this time it seems to have worked 
since I have a white screen with some colored lines and then
a black box on white screen looks like a kernel panic

then it prepares the menu but still has part of the black error screen 
on the white backgroun so you can't really see that much...

then it lists sdC0 as my dvd-rw
sdD1 as my Maxtor, the one I want to install on
then sdE0 as my first Seagate drive
after a whilte sdE1 as my other Seagate drive then asks me which one it 
wants to partition..always with part of this black screen at about half 
of the screen

Any idea what is causing this?

well, I wish I could say the same thing about my setup..I just booted 
off the CD and told it to install on the 6GB Maxtor (onboard controller) 
and I got a panic

Just wondering, is there any reason why there're different kernels and
why one cannot just install from the live version? Maybe some TODO
where one could volunteer as well?

They're different kernels because one tries to mount its root
file system from a CD and the other from a bundled-in
compressed tar file (essentially).  That requires different
pieces of code, and both don't fit into a kernel destined for
a floppy disk (9pcflop.gz).  

There's no reason the live CD can't do an install except that
no one has bothered to implement it.  

There's no real TODO list, though in general I'd rather have
people volunteering to work on drivers or ssh2 or other things
useful to the day-to-day operation of the system instead of
endless tweaking of the installer.

just wanted to say thanks, I finally got Plan 9 to install on my Compaq 
AP550 with graphic, the FreeBSD bootloader didn't pick up Plan 9 
though..does anyone know if Grub will boot Plan 9?

I have one host with grub chainloading the plan9 partition. It seems to
work fine. That install seemed to break the Solaris 8 x86 bootloader,
though.

I don't know about the FreeBSD bootloader, but if "pick up" means
autodetect, maybe it can still be configured to find plan9 and boot it.
