You can get gray hairs just reading mail in squirrelmail. it's weird, our machines, and networks, and servers, and just about every measure, are at least 100x, and sometimes 1000x, faster than they used to be just 10 years ago. But the software is getting SLOWER. Now there's a magic trick. (oh well, that rant has already been visited by ousterhout, 10 years ago, when ... never mind).
