The real complaint about should be that it mandates some mechanism that the implementation can exploit, but that mechanism is not made available to the general programmer. I will agree that is of dubious design and utility. If you guys really care about this stuff, you should participate in the process, rather than sit on the sidelines and carp about what others have done.
