As usual, I suspect hardware. Geoff helped me repair it last night. i think i screwed things up by going back and forth between two install cd's made 6 months apart. check fix did the repair. also i had assumed that the default install for fossil+venti would configure fossil to know where to find venti, but i shouldn't have. Working well now.
