It was a joke suggestion, but obviously only the length fields in the
requests could be encoded as binary logarithms, the responses would
need ordinary integer length fields not only for short reads (and
writes, in error cases) but to represent values such as 0 and -1.

Clearly, simple protocols are the right way to go.
