That's basically true, but it's considered good form to put a horizontal bar, or macron, over long vowels such as the "a" in "Maori" (but not the "a" in "Steinlager"). Unicode already caters for this, so Andrey's intervention is not really needed for Plan 9, but to cater for Unicode-challenged applications on the dark side, people have created special fonts by hi-jacking the vowels with umlauts.
