we use plan 9 as our main mail transfer agent.
i've noticed that gmail has problems connecting
to use. people sending messages to us get
connection timed out errors. gmail keeps trying
and in most cases the mail gets thru. anyone
else seeing this? are we the only ones using this as
the primary emailer? i think 1127 gets their mail
from the main bell labs mailer.

Have you looked at /sys/log/smtpd.mx? Maybe there is some matching
info to help you identify the hold up. This beast occasionally
saturates, but it's usually because I trigger a mail flood.

I'll admit I don't know the details of everything, but this page (
http://www.ii.com/internet/messaging/pine/pc/#gmailTips ) contains
info about what gmail does differently. I don't know if it will help,
but it might.

I use plan9 for incomming email and have never had a problem,
I do get stuff from gmail though perhaps not enough total traffic
to provoke a problem.

I relay through my ISP outbound as RTBLs abound these days.

No, we use Plan 9. Turns out the Plan 9 mail system can do
things the IT-managed corporate system can't and some of those
things the company relies on.

We haven't seen any problems like those you describe, but I
don't know if we get much traffic from gmail offhand.

you're not alone ☺

we use a dedicated cpu for mail, an old amd-k6. it was either that or
a trip to the landfill.

someone was recently complaining about this on a local linux list
(using postfix or something), so it's probably not a plan9 mta issue.
