I had committed the sin of disregarding US Air Force regulations on accompaniment by dependents (hey, my wife and daughter can travel where they please, they're not GIs like me...) and so not only did they keep us off USAF flights but they told Canadian and British aircrews that they (USAF) wouldn't service their planes if they took us. The Iranian AF used Portuguese ground services, so it was no problem for them. They were wonderfully hospitable to us outcasts. If I make it to one of the 9cons I'll tell you the story of diplomatic maneuverings to get GI families deported from the Azores. (This was during Vietnam; the USAF had never before dealt with virtual conscripts like us, who just wouldn't get with the program.)
