There was a lot of chagrine that we'ld never managed to make money off of Unix while everyone else did; that was just sour grapes. There was a feeling that we should hold any other software (not Plan 9 specificly) a lot closer and try to exploit them before they started making money for everyone else in the hopes it would give us a leg up in the pocketing of filthy lucre. Absent open-source, they might have been right. --upas-xevliiapakdfgachzznqkcvvqs Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Received: from plan9.cs.bell-labs.com ([135.104.9.2]) by plan9; Wed Dec 17 12:57:36 EST 2003 Received: from mail.cse.psu.edu ([130.203.4.6]) by plan9; Wed Dec 17 12:57:34 EST 2003 Received: by mail.cse.psu.edu (CSE Mail Server, from userid 60001) id 0F0EB19D4F; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 12:57:33 -0500 (EST) Received: from psuvax1.cse.psu.edu (psuvax1.cse.psu.edu [130.203.76.6]) by mail.cse.psu.edu (CSE Mail Server) with ESMTP id CB73D19D06; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 12:57:11 -0500 (EST) X-Original-To: 9fans@cse.psu.edu Delivered-To: 9fans@cse.psu.edu Received: by mail.cse.psu.edu (CSE Mail Server, from userid 60001) id EAD6C19D25; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 12:56:18 -0500 (EST) Received: from mailwasher-b.lanl.gov (mailwasher.lanl.gov [192.16.0.25]) by mail.cse.psu.edu (CSE Mail Server) with ESMTP id DBA06199BB for <9fans@cse.psu.edu>; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 12:56:06 -0500 (EST) Received: from mailrelay2.lanl.gov (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by mailwasher-b.lanl.gov (8.12.10/8.12.10/(ccn-5)) with ESMTP id hBHHu2fK025730 for <9fans@cse.psu.edu>; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 10:56:03 -0700 Received: from ccs-mail.lanl.gov (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by mailrelay2.lanl.gov (8.12.10/8.12.10/(ccn-5)) with ESMTP id hBHHu2tS030192 for <9fans@cse.psu.edu>; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 10:56:02 -0700 Received: from maxroach.lanl.gov (maxroach.lanl.gov [128.165.250.187]) by ccs-mail.lanl.gov (8.12.10/8.12.10/(ccn-5)) with ESMTP id hBHHu2d4001769 for <9fans@cse.psu.edu>; Wed, 17 Dec 2003 10:56:02 -0700 From: ron minnich To: 9fans@cse.psu.edu Subject: Re: [9fans] fortune-worthy In-Reply-To: Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.35 Sender: 9fans-admin@cse.psu.edu Errors-To: 9fans-admin@cse.psu.edu X-BeenThere: 9fans@cse.psu.edu X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.11 Precedence: bulk Reply-To: 9fans@cse.psu.edu List-Id: Fans of the OS Plan 9 from Bell Labs <9fans.cse.psu.edu> List-Archive: Date: Wed, 17 Dec 2003 10:56:01 -0700 (MST) X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-2.0 required=5.0 tests=EMAIL_ATTRIBUTION,IN_REP_TO,QUOTED_EMAIL_TEXT, REPLY_WITH_QUOTES,USER_AGENT_PINE version=2.55 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.55 (1.174.2.19-2003-05-19-exp) On Wed, 17 Dec 2003, Charles Forsyth wrote: > >>(Hard to believe that the birthplace of Unix will be forced by management > >>to use Windows!) > > they slipped up once and Unix use got away from them > but i'm sure they are careful that will never ever happen again. well, in '91, someone who shall remain nameless told me just that: that a lot of people at ATT felt that letting Unix out was a huge mistake, and that was a mistake they would never repeat with Plan 9. Talk about a bad call! ron --upas-xevliiapakdfgachzznqkcvvqs--
