It runs much faster if you search in the lsr index file:

% 9fs sources
% cd /n/sources
% time grep chess lsr
./contrib/steve/root/sys/src/cmd/mkmk/9port/gnu/chess 755 1229510622 697
./plan9/sys/src/cmd/gs/examples/chess.ps 664 1137452689 61791
0.58u 0.18s 315.60r 	 grep chess lsr
