I did something like this at a previous job, where we
had firmware exposed via 9p tunneled over a USB bulk
endpoint.

The firmware was implemented on an STM32, and mounted
from linux using lib9pclient with a p9p-ectomy.

It worked quite well. Unfortunately, it wasn't open
source, and the company is now dead.
