It may be reasonable to expect police to be prepared with a range of options for level of force employed, but it's going to far to expect civilians to carry such an array of equipment. you need escalation (in general). pepper got me out of an L shaped ambush one night -- stand off range; it wasn't amazingly effective, but it worked [tactically].
