it's probably going to fail for the same reasons that
it fails on vmware 5.

Hi
If you have a machine created with vmware 4, you can run it in vmware
5 without problems (at least i haven't noticed problems). Probably
player will still have support to "play" vmware 4 machines, but i
didn't tested it yet.
The machines created with vmware5 doesn't have rio, but they have
network, so you can drawterm to them.
I didn't tested the vesa driver with vmware 5.

Just for fun I tried the old "vmware.zip" image at
<http://plan9.bell-labs.com/plan9dist/ureg.html>. The free player
aborts with "virtual machine cannot be opened because it was created by
a version of Workstation before Workstation 4".
