It occurs to me that all your auth problems
are consistent with the cpu server not being
able (or more likely, not knowing how) to
contact the auth server. (I realize they're the
same machine, but that doesn't preclude this
from happening.)
Run auth/debug at the cpu server console
and see what it tells you.
