(a new technology has to be compatible with the old at some level otherwise it can't gain its initial toehold). i'm not convinced that plan 9 does away with the need for firewalls. and certainly many companies are not going to be getting rid of their firewalls in a hurry. when i'm visiting such a company and want to rendezvous with someone else via the local network, i should be able to do so securely without needing a connection to the outside world.
