until you've got a GUI, your only options are ed or sam -d (which is
similar in style).  plan 9 gains a lot of simplicity by leaving all
the tty emulation stuff out of the kernel and the initial console
code.

it useful to learn how to use ed anyway, for those "command-line-only
moments).
