plan9 already supports extended attributes.  e.g. upasfs(4) and
lnfs(4).  there are also tools that let you access extended
attributes created on other systems: aux/olefs

maybe you should ask the "right" fs:

% upas/fs
% grep jason /mail/fs/mbox/*/from

or

% lnfs /
% touch /usr/glenda/other_examples_of_file_as_a_filesystem_include_MS_OLE_structured_storage
