yes, and CF cards do something similar.

even so, one also needs to take account of `wear reducing', and that can
require knowledge of topology and application, and control
of strategy, all of which are conveniently located in a file
server that knows about the peculiar properties of the medium.
even the design of the storage structure for a file system
can depend on the flash characteristics.
