There is a check just before partdisk that evidently scans the hard disk for its mbr. If there is no mbr it prompts the user to install a new mbr assuming that the disk is completely blank. Since my disk's first few blocks were completely mangled in a crash the installation utility assumed the mbr didn't exist. Yay for me cuz now the disk works again. Don
