Actually, it's more that the roads just don't look like conventional roads. But they are there, make no mistake, and they are better than the convention for those that recognise them as such. It's not as much elitism as it is the realisation that what is commonplace is only evolutionarily more successful. Not better or more advanced, merely more successful in the current conditions. Like reptiles in the era of dinosaurs. The mammals were there, but they did not look successful until the temperatures plummeted. ++L
