When booting the installcd on my ibm xserve 305 it says;
Bios call failed: bios loading disabled
no plan9.ini
then it gives me a boot from: prompt but it doesn't matter which ide
interface or device i try, it just brings me back to the prompt.
FreeBSD is installed on this particular machine right now and it does in
fact have a floppy so i'm gonna try the floppy too but it would be nice if
someone could look into the source and see why it's giving this BIOS error.
Or just point me to the correct source file if it is available online
somewhere?

Hi !
It seems that Plan9 boot loader doesn't support modern hardware from IBM :(
May be someone from IBM can help :)
P.S.: I have some IBM HS21 servers and I wish to use Plan9 on them.

pci (or linux lspci -n) output would be helpful.

Sorry, I have HS21's, but I've never tried booting native on them.
Part of the problem will no doubt be that the CDROM is over a USB and
seems to be flakey even when installing certain Linux distros. My
solution (and the easiest path here) is to just use a virtualization
environment on the blades (or other hardware).

Ignore the complaint about the BIOS; it's a red herring. Lots of
BIOSes have bugs that prevent 9load from booting through them, but
unless you're attempting to boot from bios0 or sdB0, 9load is not
using the BIOS to boot.

Is anyone using usb cdroms? (with other systems, I mean).
Just curious.

I used to have an usb cd drive, but nowadays plan9 is the only thing I
have which fits on one cd and thus I stopped using this medium.

Ok so i'm hearing a lot of "unsupported" here.
I just wanted to mention that when it boots up from the CD it shows boot
devices: fd0 so it seems like only floppy is recognized.
This could be because this DVD-drive is kinda glitchy, FreeBSD had issues
with it too when i installed it but i just kept trying and after a few
timeouts it worked.
I'll just have to get my hands on one of those floppy disks i keep hearing
so much about from my grandfather. ;)

How about disk storage ... HS21 have internal SAS controller that is
unsopported by Plan9.

it's most likely because your ide/sata chipset is not recognized.
if your interested in a solution, the output of lspci -n from linux
or pci from plan 9 would be helpful.

i have a couple of cpu servers that use similar hardware.
(at least the 63xxesb southbridge).
the ide driver works with ide drives and the ahci driver
works with sata drives. on that s.b. do you get any
messages from either the ide driver or the ahci driver?
i have not tried booting from the livecd in a very long
time. i would think the sdD0 in plan9.ini would be
a problem with recognized hardware.

HS21 does't have IDE pinouts and drives. Only QLogic SAS controller and two
SFF SAS Drives

Broadcom GigE - these are a problem, as I understand it
Broadcom will not supply register level programming info for
their chipsets except under NDA.
and as these are blades you have no chance to plug in a
supported PCI NIC.

Actually, they have. I'm pretty sure it was on this list
that someone sent a link to the docs. I started working
on a 57xx driver, but got side-tracked and no longer
have access to one of the machines I was using. Maybe
I can pop it off my task stack someday...

Hello,
I don't know if that's relevant but I had no problem pluging in a
supported PCI NIC card in my IBM eserver 325, after I found out the
default (broadcom too I think) one was not supported.

the lsi 1068 series sata/sas controllers are not currently
supported. they looked moer complicated than competing
products.
if any combined mode sata/sas controller will do, you can
use something based on the marvell orion (88se64xx).
there's a driver in my contrib quanstro/sd.

I somehow, managed to install Plan 9 with the help of QEMU on a Lenovo
machine, because 9load did not recognize DVD-RW on SATA bus, which
indeed is configured in IDE Mode --

Though, I'm not an expert kernel programmer, but I shall be happy to
follow leads and, or pointers on making this work.
I think, I need to add some quirks in /sys/src/boot/pc/sd{ata|bios}.c
and /sys/src/9/pc/sdata.c as well. I however, am wondering, where the
/sys/src/9/pc/sdbios.c is?

i think instead you need to add this line
case case (0x1183<<16)|0x1039: /* SiS 966 */
to sdata.c after the existing sis entry.

there is none.
