It turns out I was an idiot (and I had hoped that the email had vanished into everyone's forgotten mail pile...). vbackup isn't block based, but instead relies on interpreting the underlying file system. I was trying to open an HFSX file system on my Mac, and so it gacked. I've started an HFSX reader, but it's like to stall for lack of time. Paul
