What dual socket Mobo/chipset is that?

I gather you got Hyperthreading to work as their are only 4 x 2 real cores, correct?

this motherboard happens to be a trenton technology
ntm5600 with 2x E5540 4c/8t xeons that came with the
motherboard.  (all the high tech companies are in
georgia these days.)  i'm sure that you could plop 2
8-thread cpus in most common server motherboards
with reasonable bios and have similar success.

i did need to change MAXCPU to 16 and employ a bit
of subterfuge, as there are no mp entries for the odd
numbered threads, i needed to fake them.

also, there is some plan 9 funkyness with apic ids >= 8,
so starting the second 8 maches takes many seconds.

it could be a single 8c/16t xeon 7500 or two with ht turned
off.  but i've never tried the 7500-series.  $2500 motherboards
seem just a tad rich to me.
