Do you enjoy mouse editing? May be I'm just an old
TTY junkie, but for me mouse is a device that lets me
switch between Xterms with screens(1) in them ;-)
On a serious note: do you guys ever edit text that
is way after the output point?

In the TTY world, you can add readline even to the
things that don't use it:
% socat READLINE EXEC:'ftp ftp.sun.com',pty,setsid,ctty
