Hello,

I've decided to knock a 9front installation together on a Pi Zero, and
I'm debating about whether to use Ethernet or WiFi.

How well does Plan 9 / 9front play with the various ethernet adaptors
you can get for a Pi Zero? Some old emails in the list mention USB
adaptors, but I was wondering about whether ones that use other
interfaces like SPI might work too.

Does anyone have any experiences they can share?

        - Willow

I think the latest 9front release has ported wifi driver for raspberry
pi from linux. Unfortunately my Pi Zero 2W cannot boot up after been
put there for a year, so I don't know how well is that supported.

For spi, you will may have to write your own driver. There are a few
helpful guides on YouTube from adventuresin9 on this subject. I've only
booted 9front on a pi 4B.

Make sure to try and boot Linux first to ensure the pi is in fact working.
I've had Pi's go bad on me for unknown reasons. They just died.

9front should boot and you can use USB Ethernet. Unsure about Wi-Fi though.

Probably just a noob not on y'all's level. I do often use LLMs to help
write code, though I've found none can really grok plan 9 C like I wish it
could.

Although, I would agree I lack the prestige, pedigree and deep
understanding of a schooled mind, I'm not in the understanding that SPI was
a general enough interface that wouldn't need additional drive support.

Everyone on 9fans is a bot except you.

But seriously, you're being paranoid. I was literally asking about
Wayland on the 9front list earlier this week. It was a really
interesting conversation, even if it did converge on reinventing devdraw.

Instead of casting aspersions, it would be more productive if you
corrected, or at least pointed out, anything unreliable; right now, I am
just as in the dark as before I reached out to 9fans.

I've got a project in mind for this thingy, incidentally: I want to make
a file server that acts as an LSP client, and see whether I can get
9front's text editors talking to language servers to make them do cool
tricks.

I'd need to talk to a Linux machine though, because AFAIK 9front doesn't
have any native language servers, hence the question about ethernet.

All I ask (as well as others) is to be up front with LLM answers. Note: I'm
not making accusations here, just a general statement.

There's been far too much discourse here which is eroding the trust and
quality of the list. I ask that we please be as civil as possible as well
as honest and up front with our answers. There is no need to rush to answer
questions, there's no prize or pot of gold. There is no life, property or
money at stake here - plan 9 is mostly a labor of love. And that is what we
should be displaying towards each other - love and respect.

I have noticed the emergence of LLMs in email clients and
word processors. Additionally, the need to cut and paste
results has been eliminated, making the integration seamless
and LLM usage soon commonplace. Based on earlier
discussions, it is important to disclose their use to
maintain transparency and trust; otherwise, we may see
increased conflict on the mailing list, both warranted and
unwarranted. It is easier and more honest to disclose their
use rather than calling out suspected users and diminishing
trust.

Written with Outlook, which contains LLM recommendations
for grammar, wording, and automated responses.

You might want to question your own ability to judge if something is
written with an LLM if you for a second thought or think I use them for
email. Which also appears to be a problem on this list. People playing
kangaroo court on who's using an LLM and when. And now it's not even
about SPI, plan 9 driver support, Ethernet and wifi support on a rpi
zeroW. Wtf, and go derail elsewhere with your paranoia.

Miller's pi code does have a basic spi driver. A 9front one is on my
to-do, but I'm very busy with other non-computer stuff for a while, so
I'm not sure when or if I will get to it. I have several other single
board computer like devices that are a higher priority to me.

9Front does have a pi wifi driver now. I've tested it on pi 3B and
3B+. Only issue I've had is that, since wifi uses sdio, it can
conflict with the sd card. I've heard 4B doesn't have this issue, but
I don't have a 4B to test myself.

And I'm not sure what ehternet on a pi zero means. pi zero doesn't
come with an rj45 jack, so is this some add-on card to provide
ethernet?

Wtf, and go derail elsewhere with your paranoia.

i have not used a pi zero, but i did try a pi 3b

the last time i tried the 9front wifi driver (back ported to richard’s pi port) i struggled with latency issues. and latency delays are a killer for 9p performance.

i experimented with cfs(8) and another more aggressive caching filesystem from charles, but i couldn't get it to perform anything like how wired ether.

having said this things may well have changed, this was about 3 years ago.

I adapted some existing code in the Inferno Pi port to work with a USB Ethernet adapter I have, based on a Realtek RTL8152B controller, that also works as a USB hub. The code originally came from 9legacy. The trick I had to do was to tell the adapter to use the USB configuration for CDC (Communications Device Class) devices.
A brief description of this can be found here:
https://dboddie.gitlab.io/inferno-diary/2024-05-15.html
If 9front supports USB CDC devices, which I think it does, then USB Ethernet should just work.

I don't even care if people use an LLM: just be upfront about it, and describe how you verified its output before posting.
