when i set up virtualbox i had to do these two steps:

download this plan9 image: http://virtualboxes.org/images/plan-9/
download and install the extension pack:
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

then the other step was to enable USB 2.0 in the Ports config setting.

that's all. boots fine as a single-cpu os.
