I have a script "u" that does just that, allowing "u date", "u man", "u ./configure" and so on.

% cat bin/u
#!/bin/rc
SHELL=/bin/sh
path=(/usr/local/sbin /usr/local/bin /usr/sbin /usr/bin /sbin /bin /usr/bin/X11 /usr/games)
MANPAGER=/bin/cat
exec $*
