        sysinfo -p      # upload information about the system

that should tell us what hardware you have.

cat /dev/kprint
so I can see those messages, and not have it trash my screen.

You are missing firmware, which you have to get from a separate place, and
which needs to end up in /sys/lib/firmware, iirc (not near my Plan 9 system
at present).

Last time I looked, there are not commands on Plan 9 that "upload ...
information to ... servers"

Alright -- so, it looks like there's no support for your SATA
controller right now, though I think it'll be really easy to
add. I'll give it a shot later this week, and put together an
iso you can test with.

Alternatively, try a separate computer.

Some further information.

I decided to collect the same information for my other computers, seeing
as, hypothetically, if I end up loving 9front, I'll want to switch all my
computers over.  (..once enough software has been written/ported for that
to be feasible, if it ever is..)
I have already documented what happens with the 7450, and my thinkpad
T430.  There wasn't much to document for the 430.

I also have a Dell Latitude e7440.  I just tested it, and it looks like it
gives results similar to the T430:

..a bunch of output..

/dev/sdM0: MMC Host Controller
/dev/sdM1: MMC Host Controller
/dev/sdM2: MMC Host Controller
bootargs is (tcp, tls, il, local!device)[]

..which I suspect indicates that this hardware is not supported, or
something else is wrong.  there absolutely may be critical info in the "a
bunch of output".  unfortunately, my phone (which contains my camera) is
broken, so if more info is needed, we either have to wait, or I have to
type it in.

..and I have now done the same test with the T420, which I have been using
as one of my two daily drivers.  With it, I am able to select what I think
is the boot drive.. but when I do, it just asks me again.. and again.. and
again.. looks like an infinite loop to me..

My  t420 works just fine.

The plan 9 boot process is quite unfamiliar if you’re used to Unix, and I
can’t escape the feeling that there’s some little thing you’re typing
wrong. It’s been solid for me on machines like this for a very long time.

You’ve been showing the prompts, but you haven’t been showing us what you
type, or at least if you have I’ve missed it.

When you get the root is from prompt on the 420 what do you type

I’d suggest you get your set up fixed and then give us the more information
you’ve talked about.

For the record, I have now done more research into your reference to a
"SATA Controller".  I think I mainly did this out of curiosity.  It being
obviously very relevant and important.  It turns out, obviously?, that this
controller isn't actually a part of the "computer" at all.  It is a part of
the "storage".  That means that if I can just find a storage medium that
contains the right hardware, I should be good to go.  As an aside, I will
observe that I have now found this page:
http://plan9.stanleylieber.com/hardware/thinkpad/wwan_ssd.html, with
details about hardware support.  So for my thinkpads, the solution may be
as simple as purchasing the right kind of storage.  I have now tracked down
suppliers for it, and so will presumably have some soon.

As for the 7450 (apparently for the 7440, the same method can be used as
for the thinkpads), it actually originally came with mSATA, and I still
have all the relevant parts.  So for it as well, all I need is to purchase
fresh mSATA storage.  (The old storage died rather catastrophically, one of
life's learning experiences).

Obviously getting the system to work with "ordinary" SATA will be very
beneficial for many people, including me, and will hence further encourage
adoption of the system.  I think.  Others will be far more knowledgeable
than me.  At least with my thinkpads, it will allow the use of a second
ssd, or allow the wwan slot to be used for it's original purpose.  Correct
me if I'm wrong.  ..  :-)

Well, I've now done about all I can at this end.  As I suddenly suspected
right before the test, connecting an msata drive to the computer via an
msata-sata adaptor didn't work.  It still looks like a sata.  I assume.

I how have the msata in the T430, and it is at least recognized.  Which
shows that at least -something- is working.  However, selecting the boot
drive still fails, same as before, asking again and again, an infinite
loop.  In theory I could do the same test with the T420, but.. why would
the results be different?

I can still try the test with this computer, the 7440.

Hve you tried *not* selecting the first drive?

..what?  I do not understand.  In all the tests I just did, for each
computer (I did not test the T420), I did at least one test where the
ordinary Sata drive was not there, so the only "memory" that could be seen
was either the mSata, the boot medium, or ram.

Ok, this is very strange.. I am trying again on the T430, which happens to
have both the mSata and it's ordinary Sata, (coincidence), both register,
but it looks like I now have -two- /data options.  /dev/sdE0/data and
/dev/sdE2/data.  As for  your suggestion, I have tried accepting the
default, which is [], or nothing, and.. same thing.  Infinite loop.

Michael: I am convinced there's some basic thing you're doing wrong, so
early in the game, that nothing after that is working.

Just about the only way out I can think of at this point is you post a
movie to youtube, showing what you are doing, starting from what you plug
in, and what you type, without skipping any steps (you keep skipping steps
when you tell us what you're doing).

Or, maybe, we need to have a plan 9 office hours, once a week, where people
bring their problems and we try to solve them. This would actually be a
sensible thing for the foundation to help with. It's worked well for Go.

My apologies for a few things, not knowing about webpaste already being one
of them.  Others are not answering your question already.  I now have the
answer, I think.  Getting it to you is a bit trickier.  You have very
effectively switched me over from trying to install it (..surely the first
step in learning a new os?..), to learning how to use it before installing
it.  This could take days, or weeks, or months.. -_- ;-)

Your photos indicated that you were installing to a USB disk. Are you
sure you're installing to the disk you want to use?

To me, it looks like you are trying to install the system on the usb-drive you are booting from. The installer would typically show all disks/partitions it found, and let you choose where you want to install.

The situation is overall very strange.  ..or maybe not strange at all.. no
errors seem to be reproducible.  At the moment, I'm carefully documenting
my progress through the install and.. it actually seems to be working,
except that I took the default (no) at the reaming option, then saw that
the instructions say to choose yes.  so now I'll have to restart.  sending
along the pictures of progress to date so you have them..

I now have bigger problems.  I re-started the system, my intention being to
try the install procedure of one of the youtube videos I saw, that used
gefs.  Part-way through that, I grew frustrated with the fact that the
system was only using a small amount of my screen, and decided to try to
back-track to use the command that fixes this.  In other words, I tried to
get out of inst/start.  I failed.  When it became clear I didn't have a
clue what I was doing and it wasn't working (not hard), I did the only
thing I could think of, a hard-reboot.  ..that was a mistake.  Well, there
was a mistake somewhere.  Now, when I boot.. I get to the screen where it
asks me to input the password to my hard-drive.. I can't.  I am using my
laptop via an external keyboard, connected via usb.  The keyboard does not
respond.  I have put in fresh batteries.  Checked that it is switched on,
nothing.  I am using an external keyboard because the contacts of the
ordinary keyboard have oxydized.  This is because I did a motherboard swap
a long time ago in such a way that I left the computer dissassembled for
months, not realizing the effect it would have on the contacts.  So, long
story short, something about what I did during the install procedure
(trying to exit it, then rebooting in the middle of it) killed the ability
of the computer to read the keyboard.  ..I can re-do my attempt to boot
using another hard-drive, but I suspect the motherboard is fried..  ..I
actually have another motherboard I can use, ironically enough.. now I
think about it.. the one in there now is used, cheep..  Also, the
hard-drive -has- had issues, it isn't new, squeeky clean.. ..I expect I'll
get back to you all once I've replaced both the ssd and the motherboard..
this will take a few days..
