x11 is not that big of an impact on a netbook. I suspect your real
problem is some horrible X desktop a la Gnome.
Get something like FLWM (very light weight) or Rio and run 9vx in that
environment. I've done that and it's very fast.
The drawterm-fb had issues and I don't recommend you spending a lot of
time to try to find it.
