I have updated my syslog daemon to the 3rd edition. It's nothing
particulary clever, apart from probably being shorter than the option
parsing portion of most Unix equivalents. If it is of any interest
you may download it from
http://www.9fs.org/dist/syslogd/syslogd.tgz
