But it's worse than that (generally). Typically they main memory for their frame buffer, provide no means to disable it, and the BIOS has no generic way to indicate which memory it is. So, even though fileservers don't need a vga, don't use embedded vga chipsets as a fileserver unless you can disable framebuffer stealing. It's a bit embarrassing when the buffer cache meets the console I/O. --upas-liaijwxeascynpnfvxvdzulnrl Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Received: from mail.cse.psu.edu ([130.203.4.6]) by cpu; Sun Feb 4 10:44:02 GMT 2001 Received: from psuvax1.cse.psu.edu (psuvax1.cse.psu.edu [130.203.30.6]) by mail.cse.psu.edu (CSE Mail Server) with ESMTP id CE486199DD; Sun, 4 Feb 2001 05:39:06 -0500 (EST) Received: from localhostnl (localhostnl.demon.nl [195.11.248.215]) by mail.cse.psu.edu (CSE Mail Server) with SMTP id 9A2D2199D7 for <9fans@cse.psu.edu>; Sun, 4 Feb 2001 05:38:28 -0500 (EST) From: William Staniewicz To: 9fans@cse.psu.edu MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <20010204103828.9A2D2199D7@mail.cse.psu.edu> Subject: [9fans] Running an ASUS M8300 on Plan9 Sender: 9fans-admin@cse.psu.edu Errors-To: 9fans-admin@cse.psu.edu X-BeenThere: 9fans@cse.psu.edu X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.1 Precedence: bulk Reply-To: 9fans@cse.psu.edu List-Id: Fans of the OS Plan 9 from Bell Labs <9fans.cse.psu.edu> List-Archive: Date: Sun, 4 Feb 2001 11:34:44 -0500 Here is a little more information: the "SMI 721 3D video chip" is found on the "MAGIC-765 Socket 370 Celeron Multimedia & Dual Ethernet Embedded Board" ICP Electronics, Inc. I know this is not on the list of preferred hardware but can it be made to run? Also, will the ethernet feature work? -Bill --upas-liaijwxeascynpnfvxvdzulnrl--
