If you want I could test it with a dedicated machine that is
waiting for that...

I've got a 4th ed. IDE file server kernel with my mirror device (RAID
1, I believe) in it. I want to test it in the morning, when I'm
rested.

I have a 4th ed IDE kernel, but will like to play w/ it
before releasing the changes. I think it may be out soon.

These are scattered throughout the various web pages and
the notes that Rob posted, but I thought I'd reiterate them
here after getting a few questions.

The file server kernels and kfs in the 4th edition use
the same on-disk layout that the corresponding 3rd edition
programs used. If you want to convert a SCSI file server,
you should be able to just boot the new kernel, and you'll
have a server that speaks both 3rd edition 9P and 9P2000.
If you have been using Nemo's IDE file server patches, they're
not currently integrated into the fs code, so your life is
a little harder. I believe Nemo has already started reapplying
them to the 4e code.

There is no wrap update that will convert a 3rd edition
install to a 4th edition install: wrap is no longer used,
and the changes are too great anyway. Instead, you can
boot the install floppy and point it at the kfs you're
currently using. The installation will prompt you as to
whether you want to wipe the kfs or keep it. If you choose
to keep the kfs (the default), your third edition file system
will be moved into /3e. The installation then configures a
startup menu to let you boot either the 4th or 3rd edition
install. Of course, you should still back up your files
first anyway.

Wrap is replaced by replica(1).

The distribution archive is no longer the obscure mkext
format but rather a bzipped ISO9660 CD-ROM image, which is
hopefully readable by a larger audience without special tools.

In place of the normal installation floppy and CD-ROM image,
you can download a VMware virtual disk with Plan 9 preinstalled.

As always, post questions here or send them to 9trouble.
Please don't mail us individually.

Enjoy!
Russ
