What I really need to do is boot a kernel. I'd like to do it without a
floppy, since finding a floppy drive is hard.
Anyone done this?

I recently built a plan 9 pc with no floppy drive and used a CD to
boot the system. As with a floppy, use disk/format to
make a bootable image. Then use disk/mk9660 can create a CD image.
Here's the commands I used:
disk/format -t 3½QD -f -b /386/pbs -d cddisk \
/386/9load /386/9pcf.gz plan9.ini
disk/mk9660 -9cj -v 'Boot' -s . -p cd.proto -b cddisk boot.iso
and the proto file is:
cpu% cat cd.proto
cddisk
Then I wrote boot.iso to a CD using cdfs.
Hope this helps,
