I thought Arduino was entirely AVR based.  But I haven't been
following any developments.

Mostly they are.  But the Yún includes an Atheros module with WiFi,
Ethernet, USB, and a MIPS processor running Linux.

Definitely.  My impression is that the Atheros module is intended to
be a big honkin' peripheral for the AVR.
