looking through the sources version of the driver, it appears that
the problems i was worried about have been addressed.  i don't have
hardware with a discontiguous set of ports with which to test.

the most likely source of this problem would be if the kernel
recognizes the same ports as sata and legacy ide.  that could be
due to a bios bug.  but i'm just guessing.  do you get any messages
from the ide driver?
