i got the diagnostic boot...#c bad time control
just now and my terminal ended up in 1970
because the file server's time had jumped to 2079
as shown by `date' on its console (or back
to 1961 for ls -l on recently touched log files).

i've reset the file server's time, and it seems all right.
i'm not sure how it happened, or indeed when, but i mention it
in case it turns up elsewhere.  i suppose if i'd left
it the dump dates would have been unusual.
