Hi!

Booting my system today showed a strange behaviour. 
After 

venti...2008/0114 09:50:28 venti: conf...httpd
tcp!127.1!8000...init...icache 0 bytes = 1,000 entr
ies; 4 scache
sync...2008/0114 09:50:29 arenas00: indexing 1452 clumps...

the system hangs for some minutes (I attached the whole kmesg).
What's wrong here? Is it my HD?

This happens to me all the time after my QEMU crashes. I consider it  
normal, but hate it.

My machine never chrashed, but it occurs every time I boot my machine, 
since today. And the number of clumps vary from boot to boot.

If I understand things correctly, this is venti catching up with the
indexing that got suddenly interrupted when the machine was turned
off.  I can see this very easily by having a manual venti start and
stop on another HDD, if I do stuff to that venti and shut it down
immediately, I get the "indexing clumps" upon restat of that venti,
whereas if I leave it for a few minutes before stopping, I get
immediate venti startup.

I'm not sure if it is correct that venti blocks your system startup
though.  I thought it was meant to be able to serve immediately.  But
I propably don't understand too well.

one needs to run fshalt before halting a machine running venti or fossil.
venti is much more likely to have trouble than fossil, but i believe the new
version of venti does a better job with unexpected outages.

if you're running on an unstable platform, you might consider running
venti on a stable machine or not running venti at all.  ken's fs has been
more resistant to unplanned outages than venti for me.  (i have no ups.)

i thought venti was only read, not written, except during a fossil archive dump,
so it should only be vulnerable during that interval
(which might be large just after file system initialisation).

i run fshalt every time before halting. the problem occured monday the
first time. how can i fix it?
