I've seen similar things with my apple keyboard on plan9 with the pi (as well as the failure you noted earlier). the pi is *very* picky about power. I do use the powered hub, but what made a bigger difference for me was getting a beefier power supply (most of the USB things you'll likely find lying around are in the .5-1 amp range; optimally, the pi wants 1.2 or better).
