[9fans] Chemnitz Linux Days 2026

Hi everyone,

the call for presentations and talks for the Chemnitz Linux Days 2026 (Germany) is out. This year (2025) we were able to connect three people from the Plan 9 community, and I was thinking it would be cool if we had an official presence there.

I was thinking about applying for a booth. For that, we need 2-4 people in total who can manage that. I was thinking it could be cool to set up a small grid there with a few computers (laptop, raspberry pi, drawterm) for demonstration, showcasing what Plan 9 can be today, including modern applications. I also asked a friend last year so we can borrow his "lego desktop computer" (which is a raspberry pi) which could be a little eye catcher.

It would also be possible to apply for a talk, though I can't do that.

Afaik, the whole event is in German only.

Yeah, for the talks it's pretty tight since someone has to prepare it. It's not an extremely high academic event, if you look at the talks and presentations of this year you can get an idea.[1]

I think for a booth it's pretty much doable. We have many papers already and we don't have to write a full paper. A poster is enough, and for the booth we can make a fun demo. I think most things come down to explaining and showing things to the visitors.

This year, there was also Haiku, one of the BSDs, and a few of those embedded chip OSes. I think Plan 9 would be in a good neighborhood there.

The event is at 28-29.03.2026. For the booth we'd have to apply until 12.01. (dd.mm).

It's a question of where we'd meet. There's a discord server for 9fans which could be used to connect, then we could move the interested people to a private group.

Other than that, I can offer deltachat (anonymous, free, easy to set up) and other more common messengers (whatsapp, Signal, telegram; most of which need to disclose the phone number).

I understand that people might not want to join the discord server for reasons, or set up yet another messenger account just for one event.

I know there's also matrix and irc. Irc has no backscroll, so important messages could be missed, and matrix is not a service that I use (yet).

Hi,

I want to inform you that I registered a booth at the event. The organizers will decide this month if they want us or not.

Right now it seems that Pavel and I will be there, though it's not 100% sure. For the booth we can be a maximum number of 4 people (though obviously everyone can come as a visitor).

The tables are pretty small, so I asked for two tables 80x80 cm each, but I think we can discuss the specifics with them or change the request. The plan is the same: build a small grid for demonstration so visitors can play with the grid. We'll discuss the details in a smaller round, I think. Just let me know if you want to be part of that round. Anyone is welcome, just keep in mind that this is a German event.
