I assume you tried rebooting when the cursor
didn't work?  Andrey was right about moving
the mouse screwing it up, but waiting doesn't
always clear the problem.  If you have a 
window open then doing "echo reset >/dev/mousectl"
sometimes does.  So would rebooting.
