I've written a system that ran on the 4501 and still
have a few. I've still got some and some 4801s. I'm
going to try to put Plan 9 on them when I get a chance.
Seems like it would make a great secstore. Maybe even
an auth server.

plan 9 does run fine on a geode, those look about the same as my geode
cluster boards.

It would be fun to throw a little PCI video card on there if possible,
but I like the little case.
It does seem perfect for a secstore, or maybe a VPN router (or IPv6 bridge).

That's not a problem. The firmware includes code to reburn the bios.
It's not just like a PC bios--there are some debugging
stuff in there. It also PXE boots.

I haven't personally but I know a bunch of people
who use them and are happy with them.

yeah, people are doing that now. You get a chunk of the flash part that is
not eraseable. The problem is that chunk does a lot of "special" setup
that in many cases is not what you want ...

i've used the 4501.
unlike some `embedded' PC implementations i've used, the BIOS works on serial port,
which was better for me. the BIOS also seemed to work, which made a change.
it doesn't take much to get plan 9 or inferno running on them.
for plan 9, it looks as though i deleted cga.$O from a copy of mkfile--
possibly cga should be configured explicitly in /sys/src/9/pc config files not mkfile--
removed all the graphics devices from pcsoe (compared to pccpu),
added
void screeninit(void){}
to the port section, and changed the device configuration.
then as usual something intervened and i didn't do as much with it as i intended.
