That's what I thought at first, but it doesn't work:
; file antiword-0.33.tar.Z
antiword-0.33.tar.Z: compressed
; gunzip <antiword-0.33.tar.Z >/dev/null
gunzip: <stdin>: bad gzip file magic
; gunzip *.Z
gunzip: antiword-0.33.tar.Z is not a gzip deflate file
So I just dug up a copy of compress and compiled it under APE.
