it is possible to boot from a floppy, but there isn't a full distribution
on floppies.

curious; this is a *new* laptop that *does* have a floppy but has neither a
cdrom nor an ethernet port?

i'd look for a cheap cardbus network adaptor (one that is supported)
plan9 is much more interesting in a network.
