unfortunately i don't think i'm mixing bits and bytes.
i have gigE with r8169 cards in both machines.
and a gigE router.  the coincidence of the throughput
being close to 100Mbits/sec is very interesting.

i'm pretty sure this is not due to caching, and i'm pretty sure
that i'm moving about 211Mbit/sec.
