Good idea: don't forget the UK ain't in the Euro zone yet.

Does anyone know anywhere cheap in London to buy £UK?

N.B. It may be worth bringing some Euros too,
since lots of the big shops take them now!

Or if you're paranoid, buy some pound-sterling travellers cheques from 
Amex. You can cash these for free at any Thomas Cook exchange kiosk at 
the airports.
