Without this part, everything makes sense, so...  is it possible that
this is not actually the case?

On what date did you create the 2019/12 directory if not Dec 3?  Why
would you have created it before the 2019/12/03 directory?  I would
have thought it would have been created immediately prior to the
2019/12/03 directory, e.g. via mkdir -p 2019/12/03.

i have inadvertantly misrepresented the facts.  you are right, 2019/
was created in exactly the way you describe.  i mistakenly believed
there were prior directories in 2019/.

so, it all makes sense.
