Hello 9front, I think some tweaking of the aesthetics would be a
superficial but large improvement. I suggest starting by changing to a
cleaner default font (maybe vera?)

Right, and I install Vera everytime I install plan9, or now 9front. I
just think that vera (or something else) would make a much better
default than pelm..

I've grown to like /lib/font/fixed/unicode.6x12.font. i think erik quanstrom
has a small collection of fonts in his contrib.

The only real issue with the default fonts is the license.

The licence is a feature, just copyright law is a bug.
