I will whole-heartedly recommend you doing so. The System may feel familiar because of its UNIX roots, but there are enough differences in detail and in general approach to doing things that taking it up as learning a wholy new thing is very much advisable. The papers in /sys/doc, the supplemental choice of documents on cat-v.org, the manual pages, the source code itself, and spending some time hanging out with and getting to know the community and its ways should, in no particular order, be enough to jeopardize your (prospective) computer-themed career.
